Funny Little Luke

Luke's Kiss
One morning while all hanging out on our big bed, I was asking Luke to help me teach Brody how to kiss. Luke is not much of a kisser. He'll occasionally let you kiss him on the cheek, and sometimes will kiss on the lips, but he's really not into it. I joke that he's only 2 and already thinks Mommy kisses are gross. After I said, "Let's show Brody how to do kisses," he grabbed my face, locked lips, and pressed so long and hard that his head shook! After he finally let me loose, Howie and I were rolling with laughter.

Pat-A-Cake
Brody loves this rhyme.
"Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake, baker's man, bake me a cake as fast as you can.
Roll it, pat it, mark it with a B and put it in the oven for Brody and me!"
It will make him stop fussing almost every time.
We sing it so much Luke has learned it. Sometimes we insert an "L" and "put it in the oven for Luke and me." Sometimes we sing "put it in the oven for Luke and Brody." Luke was playing with his cats, Shadow and Oreo. He was clapping them together and singing the rhyme. His version went "...roll it, pat it, and mark it with a Shadow and Oreo!"

No Way
For some reason Luke loves to say "no way." I don't even know where he got this. He does shout it in disobedience but he also says it at other times.

We were on our way to IHOP. He kept saying we were going to IHOK.
So I explained, "No, I-HOP, like a bunny, HOP."
Luke: IHOP.
Mom: Do you know what IHOP stands for? International House of PANCAKES. (He LOVES pancakes!)
Luke excitedly: NO WAY!

We were eating dinner. Luke was being funny, yet very boyish.
Mom: Luke I love you very much but Mommy needs to get a girl.
Luke (in a girls have cooties kind of voice): NO WAY!
Of course Daddy had to high five him for that one!

First I Love You's

After hearing "I love cake!" and "I love this book!" I knew Luke could differentiate what he liked, disliked, and even LOVED. But he still hadn't responded to my "I love you." At a prompting he said it to Grandma, but not to us.

Today I heard those sweet words.

As I was leaving for work this morning,
Luke: Bye Mama.
Mama: Bye baby. I love you.
Luke: I love you.

Later in the evening I talked to him after he sat in a time out. I explained what he did and why it was not ok. We always make sure to give him a hug and tell him we love him and he gets in trouble.
Mama: I love you. We want the best for you, that's why you need to obey. I love you.
Luke: (thru tears and with a big hug) I love you.

He told me he loved me three times today! That's been Luke's style...when he learns something new he goes all out. Today I was blessed by it!

Brody's Walking

He's been working on his first steps for awhile now. He's very catious about it. This is the most steps he's taken. He loves having us clap for him when he's made it to his destination.

A 2 Year Old's Worship

The most important part of my kids development is their spiritual development. Its great that Luke sings his ABC's, recognizes letters, remembers something I told him the day before, counts to 20, and spells his name. And it always amazes me that he can do any of that. I think that will be one of the greatest things I have witnessed in this life: carrying a child, birthing them, and watching them grow and learn. The words I have to describe that seem to fall so short. But an even greater thing I want to witness is my children loving God more deeply than I do and seeing them purposefully living their lives with Jesus at the center. That being said, I like to record each little move they make toward knowing God and expressing love for him.

This morning Luke turned on the radio in his room. He and Brody were hanging out and jumping on the bed while they listened to music. I was in the bathroom getting ready and heard "Awesome God" come on the radio. I wondered if Luke would recognize the song from Puggles and sure enough, the music suddenly got louder. I went in to see him dancing in front of the radio. He puts both arms in the air and sort of jogs with his legs. The chorus goes:

Our God is an awesome God
He reigns from heaven above with wisdom, power and love
Our God is an awesome God

We've learned motions to the song. So when they sing "wisdom" you are supposed to put your finger on your temple as if pointing to your brain. He puts both fingers on his cheekbones. And that's pretty much the only motion he remembers. So as he's jogging around putting his arms in the air and then on his cheeks, he's worshipping God. So cool. I started singing with him and showing him the rest of the motions. He likes the motion for "love." He gives himself a big hug. When the song was over, both Brody and Luke clapped enthusiastically.

Later today I was given a new perspective on teaching my children about God. The author of "Can You Hear Me?" said that we should assume our children hear God. God speaks to us, why would he not speak to them? God does not only relate with adults, but he meets children at their level too. So instead of thinking I have to start from scratch, teach AT my child about God, and tell him God will speak to him, why not assume that as my child prays and looks through the pictures of his Bible that he hears from God, and ask him what God says to him? I learned that its not all about telling him, its about expecting that God is working in his life and asking him...even at 2.

Random Recollections

There are a lot of little things that happen or get said each day that I just don't want to forget. Its difficult to remember Luke at Brody's age, and once Luke starts speaking fluently, I know I will forget the funny little things he said when he was first beginning to talk. So these may not mean much to you as a reader, but they mean something as a mom. Hopefully they will jog my memory in later years.

A friend of ours once told us that the best moment is when your kids say 'I love you' back. Now that Luke is speaking so well I've been waiting for that moment. We were reading a book that says, "Thank you God for the food we eat." We always go through the page and talk about what is on each plate..."booger" (burger), "fish," "cake...I LOVE cake." Ha! The first time he says he loves something, its cake!

A older gentleman approached me at Costco and asked if I'd help him read the peanut butter label. As we walked away from talking with him, Luke asked, "Who dat, Mama?"
He does the same thing when I get off the phone.

Luke often comes with me before church to set up. Just before church begins the staff meets to pray. We had gotten through most of the prayer without Luke interupting as he sometimes does. But when we got to the pastor's turn to close the prayer, Luke not so quietly says, "Who dat guy, Mama?"

Whenever Luke hears something he puts his hand to his ear and says, "What's dat, Mama?" Its funny the things he hears. Yesterday it was the chicken sizzling in the pan, but this was amongst a lot of other noise. He must have his Daddy's ability to hear everything.

Luke is practicing his likes and dislikes. He mostly dislikes - even things he liked 5 minutes ago! He wanted to have some of Daddy's potato salad (which he's never had before) so he says, "I like it. My favorite." (I'm sure he got "favorite" from Lincoln who says that a lot.) Daddy gave him a bite. He spit it out and said, "I don't like it."

Brody points at everything that he wants and says, "ugh, ugh." He'll often use his whole body to say it depending on how excited he is about it. Sometimes he'll tip his head onto his shoulder as he points.

Brody jumps on the bed with Luke. But since he can't stand up he puts his hands on the bed, gets up on his feet and starts jumping. Its the funniest thing!

Brody insists on eating with a bowl and utensils. If he sees that you have a spoon or fork and he doesn't, he will scream and refuse to eat until he gets one. This goes for the bowl his food originated from too.

We asked Luke if he wanted to go to Puggles. He said, "Yea, I wanna play and sing." Later that when he got home, I asked him if he had fun at Puggles. His response in his choppy language, "I learn - about - God."

Luke was playing his Leap Frog video game with Ella. It was his turn, so he was standing on the mat and using the controller. I told him to hop off - it was Ella's turn now. To which he responded, "No, my turn." I should know by now that this kind of demand does not work with Luke. So I refrased, I don't know how I said it but it was something along the lines of "find a place to stop so Ella can have a turn." He got one more point, jumped off and said, "Ella's turn!" I think he needs the freedom to decide for himself and then he is happy to do comply. Later in this interaction Ella was not standing on the correct color. When the game told her to stand on the orange home spot, Luke repeated it, bent down and guided Ella's legs back to the orange spot. Evidence (among other things) that God has made him to be a little leader.

Brody and I were coloring. Luke came over and wanted to write his name. As I wrote an L, I said "L." To our shock and surprise, he continued with "U-K-E." We could not believe he was spelling his name!

Mom: You're getting so big.
Luke: I little.
